Rachael Ray, the popular daytime talk show host, recently did segment on anti-aging called the Human Lab Segment where she had audience members and Dr. Ciraldo, Professor of Dermatology, evaluate top anti-aging creams and techniques to see which really worked. She passed out a few top products to select audience members and then had them report back a few weeks later to report on their results.
The derma roller, a small hand held device that contains 192 surgical a steel points, was one of the most popular skincare devices evaluated.
How It Works -The Research
The derma roller is used for removing acne scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, fine lines. And it can even help with big pores, black heads, and white heads. This micro needling or skin needling anti-aging technique is also used to perform collagen induction therapy (CIT). Studies show that when this device is roller over the skin, it creates small puncture wounds which cause the body to produce collagen in an attempt to heal the skin. Our collagen production falls dramatically after about age 35 or so.
A recent study performed by a Swiss dermatologist – who tested the derma roller on 600 people with aging skin problems and facial scars – found that there was up to a 40% improvement in skin rejuvenation and up 60% reduction in scars. They speculated that the increased collagen production from the derma roller – which they call collagen induction therapy (CIT) – is what helps to heal the skin, fill out depressed or pitted scars, reduce and smooth stretch marks, and repair wrinkles.
So how does it work? When the derma roller is rolled over the skin, it creates tiny little punctures into the upper dermis of the skin which signals to the body that it should begin a wound healing process. This means it starts to increase production of collagen fibers, skin cells, and elastin. This helps to fill in scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks. In fact, the derma roller is considered one of the best acne scar treatment you can perform at home.
Also, it allows for increased absorption of your favorite anti-aging creams. Every time you use the derma roller, it causes new collagen and elastin to form thereby reducing the appearance of stretch marks, scars, and wrinkles. This is one of the best home remedies for face wrinkles on the market. It was nice to see a product review that really worked and was based on science.
One of the best advantages of the derma roller is that its non-invasive and doesn’t require healing or downtime like other skin rejuvenating techniques. And its also safe for men and women of color; this is also an issue when considering chemical or laser peels.
